Just something quick to share with you all today. The Boston Globe featured an article about Irish immigrants settling in the greater Boston area in 1822. It’s a cool little article and you can read it online HERE.

The articles touches upon the fact that these Irish were canal diggers. In my research for GO HOME PADDY, I often came across stories of the Irish paid by Southern landowners to do the extremely dangerous work of digging canals instead of using slaves. The thinking was that it was cheaper to pay a Mick to dig and die, then to waste property (a slave). Bad times for all concerned, I’d say.
